Irsen was at the light tower, the tallest one in Adua, towering over the city so those who lived under it were in its perpetual shadow. At the peak, where the engine was, the Hikari were making some type of contraptionâspinning rings, it looked like.
An old master fumbled, dropping something on the floor, and Irsen, whoâd been yelling like a rabid dog with the fine hair he cared so much about frizzy and wild as if struck by lightning, punched the old master with a closed fist, as hard as he could. He hit an old man in the face and drew blood.
âGet out!â Irsen screamed.
A horrified Hikari girl, a captain as Sumya knew her to be, helped the old master off the floor.
âGet the fuck out!â Irsenâs voice was a shrieking whip that slashed at everything in sight. âGet out! Get out! Get out!â
âGuardianââ the girl began but he lashed at her also.
âGet out, Mika. Everyone leave! Youâre all useless. Get the fuck out of my sight before I decide the Grace you carry is worth more than your lives!â Irsen screamed. Grey eyes burning like white flames, heâd clearly lost his mind.
The Hikari filed in a line and softly murmured amongst themselves as they passed Sumya and descended the spiraling stairs of the tower. Their cloaks shuffling and their soles tapping the stone steps echoed up.
âWhat is it?â Irsen glared at Sumya and she hesitated. âWhat is it!â the Guardian screamed, balling his fists.
Lucretius, who Sumya hadnât seen in the room, was suddenly in her face. âLeave,â he said.
A hand in her satchel, Sumya felt her Lordâs letterâbut she hesitated.
âLeave,â the prince said, and pushed Sumya, sending her tumbling down the steps.
She got up, dusted her dress, and left with the letter.
